Pendleton Residue Management Experiment

This experiment has been added by the GLTEN Curators using existing published sources.

Years operational
1931—
Objective
Originally initiated to evaluate the effect of different soil amendments (based on farmer practices in the 1930’s) on soil and crop productivity under the wheat-fallow system. Today the experiment is used to determine the point of equilibrium in C sequestration and depletion for each treatment and how soil microbial community and soil quality will be affected.
Description
The C and N content of the upper 24 inches of soil has been determined about every 10 years (1931, 1941, 1951, 1964, 1976, 1986, and 1995). Straw yield, grain and straw N content, and the nutrient content of organic amendments have been determined since 1977.

Soil description
Soils are coarse silty mixed mesic Typic Haploxerolls
Climate description
The climate is semi-arid, but partially influenced by maritime winds from the Pacific Ocean. Winters are cool and wet, and summers are hot and dry

Description
The rotation is winter wheat/fallow and the tillage is conventional moldboard plough.
Design description
The experimental design is an ordered block consisting of nine treatments (10 originally) and two replications. The rotation is fully phased such that wheat and fallow plots are present each year. Plots measure 11.6 x 40.2m.

Design description
Experiment treatments were modified with spring and fall disking being replaced by the no burn treatment (1967-78) then spring burn (1979-). A second and higher N rate was also introduced.
