Long-term Pesticide Free Production Study

This experiment has been added by the GLTEN Curators using existing published sources.
Objective
To investigate the effects of Pesticide Free Production (PFP), a production system where in-crop herbicides were omitted from certain crops in rotation, on weed populations and crop performance in two crop rotations. The goal is to maintain productivity and reduce pesticide applications.

Soil description
Orthic Black Hochfeld fine loam soil

Design period: Phase 1 (2000—2016)

Design description
The experiment has two fully phased rotations with three treatments: Control - in-crop herbicides were applied on all annual crops. PFP1 - in-crop herbicides not applied to oats. PFP2 - in-crop herbicides not applied to oats and flax. Two further control plots of native prairie and chemical fallow are included. In 2010 the rotations were updated to include wheat, canola, and soybean which are commonly grown in 3 and 4-year rotations in Manitoba.

Description
The study was modified to reflect modern weed management techniques in Manitoba to reduce the weed seedbank and herbicide-resistant green foxtail.
Design description
The experiment continues the two previous rotations in modified form and replace herbicide use with row spacing as treatment factor. The control plots of native prairie and chemical fallow are continued.
